How To Fix The Unable to Move Message Error On Your iPhone

If you have an IMAP email account setup on your iPhone or iPad, you may have run into the ‘Unable to Move Message’ error when trying to delete an email, and if so, you know how frustrating it can be. How to fix the “Unable to Move Message” error…

In order to stop the ‘Unable to Move Message’ error notification from popping up when you try to move an email to the trash and allow you to actually delete unwanted emails from your IMAP email account on your iPhone or iPad, you’ll need to go into the advanced settings for your email account and select the specific folder where you want your deleted emails to be moved to.

The process for selecting a location to move deleted messages to is as follows:

    1. Open the Settings App on your iPhone/iPad
    2. Select ‘Mail, Contacts, Calendars’
    3. Select the email account you are experiencing the ‘Unable to Move Message’ error with
    4. Select the ‘Account’ box
    5. Select ‘Advanced’
    6. Select ‘Deleted Mailbox’ under Mailbox Behaviors
    7. Select the ‘Trash’ folder on the server (as shown below)
    8. Using the arrow icon on the top left, back up two screens to the Account screen, and then select the blue ‘Done’ button on the top right

That’s it!  Now that you’ve specified where you want to move deleted messages to for your account, you should no longer see the ‘Unable to Move Message’ error message when you try to move unwanted emails to the trash.

    Jim, I have 3 email accounts into my ipad but on only one of them can i get ‘deleted mailbox’ using your instructions. I have followed the instructions for that account but still have a frozen mailbox and the ‘unale to move message’ message

      Hi Peter, what type of accounts are they – Microsoft Exchange, AOL, GMail, Yahoo, etc? Not every account type will offer the same options, so let me know which account types you are having the issues with and we’ll get it straightened out!
